This is the abstract of my presentation at the 2015 SAND Conference in San Jose California.
The Nature of Consciousness and the Consciousness of Nature.
What is the nature of consciousness? What does that question even mean? The word nature comes for the latin Nasci, which means birth. But we are not here to look for the birth of consciousness as a fact of history. We aren’t looking for that moment or mechanism by which consciousnesses arose out of the formerly dead universe. For anyone interested in this conference, the fact that consciousness is not an emergent property is already old news.
Our motivation for exploring the nature of consciousness is not to establish a new cosmology, yet another imagined structure that we can impose upon our vision of the world. Instead, we follow our experience back to the source of all experience in order to invoke a recognition, an immediate knowing of consciousness by itself. That is the motivation that burns in the heart.
It is our nature to discover our true nature. We were born precisely to go back and witness the birth of the universe out of the boundlessness of consciousness, not back in time, but backwards through the layers of notions, perceptions, and identities until we arrive at the very moment of birth, this moment.
What we, as consciousness, find here is that consciousness doesn’t have a nature. Consciousness is nature. Everything that we call nature is made of consciousness. When we directly witness the universe being birthed by consciousness we can be joyfully overwhelmed by the beauty of our own playful being. At this point, we tend to drop these sorts of ideas, having no further use for them, except for a small, outlying subset, who find as much delight in the exploration and expression of the impossible as a normal human would find in sunset or a symphony. Those of us, we are gathered here today.
